Northern Illinois AATG Fall Meeting and Workshop 2011
The New German AP Exam
Saturday, September 24, 2011 at COD (College of DuPage),
SRC (Student Resource Center) Room 2052

The significantly revised German AP exam is going in effect this year! High school students will take it for the first time next spring and colleges and universities will use it as an evaluative
measure as they admit students into their programs. The approach is theme-oriented and the curriculum is organized according to six main topics: Globalisierung, Naturwissenschaften und
Technologie, Alltag, Persönliche und öffentliche Identität, Familie und Gesellschaft, and Schönheit und Ästhetik. Diverse forms of communicative competence, connected meaningfully to cultural content, are emphasized.
• What does the new German AP exam look like?
• What is going to be tested?
• How can I best prepare students for the exam?
• Where can I find materials to implement relevant topics in class?
• What can college instructors expect as students enter their programs?

You are cordially invited to find out the answers to these questions during the Northern Illinois
AATG Fall Workshop! This is a fantastic opportunity and a significant bargain for high school
and middle school as well as college and university instructors to learn about the changes
involved in the new exam!

Morning Session
Representatives from the Goethe-Institut Trainer Network Central and instructors
from the Northern Illinois Chapter of the AATG will present the new exam and give
examples of materials that can be used to prepare for the exam. Our primary
presenters are:
* Katharina Barbe (Northern Illinois University, Illinois)
* Ninja Nagel (Barrington High School, Illinois)
* John Stark (Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy, Illinois)
* Volker Langeheine (Millard North High School, Nebraska)
* Friedemann Stuebing (Northern Illinois University, Illinois)

Participants will also have the opportunity to explore many relevant materials to use; Dagmar Schalliol and Arthur Grauman will present Langenscheidt resources.
Afternoon Session
During the afternoon, participants will have the chance to discuss selected aspects of the AP exam further. High school and middle school instructors may create their own
AP-related materials and college and university instructors may talk about language placement and the effects of the new AP exam at colleges and universities.
